10 Job Interview Bloopers and What You Can Do To Correct Them

Im sure youve sat through movie or TV bloopers at the end of shows and laughed at the mistakes the actors make during the filming of the show. If I could put together a film with bloopers that people make in interviews it might seem funny as well " but not when it happens in real life - to you!

How do you avoid bloopers? First you become aware of what some of the pitfalls of interviewing are and then you prepare and practice so that it wont happen to you. Here are 10 of those very pitfalls to watch for.

1. Poor non-verbal communication " slouching " fidgeting " lack of eye contact

Its about demonstrating confidence - standing straight, making eye contact, and connecting with a good, firm handshake. That first impression can be a great beginning, or a quick ending to your interview.

2. Not dressing for the job or company " over casual

It is important to look professional and well groomed, above all. Todays casual dress codes in the office, do not give you permission to dress as they do when you interview. Whether you wear a suit or something less formal depends on the company culture and the position you are seeking. If possible, call and find out what the company dress code is before the interview.

3. Not listening " only worrying about what you are going to say

Observe your interviewer and match that style and pace. From the very beginning of the interview, your interviewer is giving you information, either directly or indirectly. If you are not listening " turning up your intuitive - you are missing a major opportunity. Good communication skills include listening and letting the person know you heard what they said.

4. Telling it all " even if its not relevant - talking too much

Telling the interviewer more than they need to know could be a fatal mistake. When you have not prepared ahead of time you may tend to ramble, sometimes talking yourself right out of the job. Prepare for the interview by reading through the job posting; matching your skills with the requirements of the position, and relating only that information.

5. Being over-familiar " your new best friend is NOT the interviewer

The job interview is a professional meeting to talk business. This is not about making a new friend. The level of familiarity should mimic the demeanor of the interviewer. It is important to bring energy and enthusiasm to the interview, and to ask questions, but not to over-step your place as a candidate looking for a job.

6. Using inappropriate language " you guys know what I mean

Be aware of any inappropriate slang words or references to age, race, religion, politics, or sexual preferences " these topics could get the door slammed very quickly. Its a given that you should use professional language during the interview.

7. Acting cocky " being overconfident " king of the hill

Even if youre putting on a performance to demonstrate your ability, over-doing is as bad, if not worse, as being too reserved. Attitude plays a key role in your interview success. There is a fine balance between confidence, professionalism, and modesty.

8. Not answering the question asked " jumping in without thinking

If you fail to relate a specific example, you not only dont answer the question, but you miss an opportunity to prove your ability and tell about your skills. When an interviewer asks for an example of a time, you did something, he is seeking a sample of your past behavior.

9. Not asking questions " a missed opportunity you will live to regret

When asked if they have any questions, the majority of candidates answer, No. Wrong answer! It is extremely important to ask questions. It demonstrates an interest in what goes on in the company. It also gives you the opportunity to find out if this is the right place for you. The best questions come from listening to what is asked during the interview, and asking for additional information.

10. Appearing desperate " Please, please hire me!

Its a tough job market, and you need a job! But, when you interview with the Please, please, hire me, approach you appear desperate and less confident. Maintain the three Cs during the interview: Cool, Calm, and Confident! You know you can do the job, " now, make sure the interviewer believes you can, too.

In the interview you want to be as prepared and polished as possible. Everybody makes mistakes " thats what makes us human. We can laugh at ourselves a great deal of the time when we get tongue-tied or forget someones name " even our spouses. If you do make a mistake during your interview, consider it a human error and learn from the experience. In the meantime do your homework and get prepared.

Before you can have a successful home based business, you must first possess 3 "intangibles." These are things that must come from WITHIN you.

 ===> Intangible 1 <===

First, you must have a strong WHY.

Why MUST you have a successful home business? What is driving you? What is it that you CAN'T have in your life anymore and/or what is it that you absolutely MUST HAVE now?

For me, I couldn't stand working 12+ hours a day anymore and missing the experience of my children growing up. I also absolutely HAD TO HAVE the freedom of being able to control my life and finances through a little box (laptop computer) that I could carry with me anywhere in the world and not be tied to anyone's time pressures or demands but my own. That was my carrot and my stick. I felt a great pain deep in my gut of missing out on my children's lives and the incredible freedom that succeeding in a home based business would provide for me. I found my why. You MUST find yours.

You must BELIEVE that it is possible.

If you don't believe that it's POSSIBLE for you to have a successful home based business or make your living from home, you won't. It's that simple.

For me, figuring out that it was possible was just a matter of realizing that many other people were ALREADY making great money working from home. If they could do it, I could too. It would just be a matter of figuring out what those people were doing and then adapting it to my situation.

There is no shortage of undeniable PROOF that people (millions of them) are making money working from home. Just get online and do some research and you'll find countless testimonials and stories of REAL PEOPLE making real money on the Internet. Or head to your local bookstore and you'll find the same documented evidence of this fact. Truth is, it's getting easier and easier to make money with your own home based business.

I've always said that "affiliate marketing" (a simple way to make money from home) is the job of the future. In the "old" days, you had to go to a potential employer, apply for the position and hope for the best. Now you can simply go to any company you want, fill out their affiliate application and start work immediately. Affiliates are the new working class. In fact, making money with affiliate programs or making your living on the Internet is WAY MORE than possible. It is pretty much (or will be soon enough) unavoidable now. Affiliate marketing is the "job" of the future that's already here TODAY.

You must be willing to MAKE THE LEAP.

Ready, FIRE, then aim... This is the operating philosophy you MUST adopt to succeed with a home based business.

That's backwards for most people who like to aim before they fire. The fact is that home based business success is a moving target... The only thing constant about it is change. You need to stop analyzing the game and simply jump into it. You can't learn from the outside... You have to be IN THE RING to truly understand it.

The lesson here is that you will never really be READY to start a home based business. You simply have to start one. It's like having children... You're never really ready, but when it happens you adapt and grow. This is what I call "Making the Leap."

The good news is that the cost of failure with having your own home based business is very small. In the "brick and mortar" world you need to evaluate things very carefully before you decide to open up a business. It's almost always necessary to invest thousands of dollars to get an offline business off the ground. However, on the Internet you can often start a successful business for less than $100.
